Some people just refuse to believe. This is no surprise but it is a shame. It is true now and it has always been true. Some people have hardened their hearts so hard that they will now allow themselves to be moved by the truth. As we read through the gospel of John it does not take long to see that this is the case. By chapter seven Jesus has already performed many signs that would be impossible if He were not from God. For this reason many believed in Him. Those who believed were moved by evidence. They asked "When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done" (John 7:31)? This question demands a negative response. They saw all the signs that Jesus did and came to the conclusion that this Man must be from God and that which He speaks must be true. However, one verse later we read that the Pharisees (who also saw the signs of Jesus) were not convinced that He spoke truth. They did not let logic and reason determine their opinion of the Lord but rather pride and emotion. Therefore, they did not let the signs move them to belief but rather they saw the signs and turned angry. They sent officers to arrest Jesus.
How do you respond to the truth? Certainly, we all think that we respond well to it. We like to think of ourselves as truth seekers and hopefully we all are. When faced with the gospel message have we believed it and obeyed it? Further, when we read truths in God's word that conflict with the way we live, are we then willing to change? What do we do when we are confronted with the truth? Let us be honest people. Let us embrace the truth with open arms.
