Flogged and reviled
Where is his God?
This is God's child!

It did begin
On the sixth hour
Angels prayed it would end.

b) nuestro mundo piensa Jesus compró "Iglesias" (plural).

c) algunos esperan mejor tiempo.

Recuerde: Sin fe no podemos agradar a Dios (Hebreos 11: 6).

Have we done these things and are we living a faithful Christian life?

What does the word church mean?

God has always required His people to be a separate, distinct people.
From the beginning unto now, in every dispensation, God has mandated:
Separation - Exclusivity - and Holiness. The very first separation God ever
made was to separate the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:4); and in
regards to His people, He remains consistent to this day calling His people
out of darkness into His marvelous light (1Peter 2:9).
When sin first engulfed this world, God baptized it in water and
washed away its sin, separating Noah and his family from all other people on
earth (cf. 1Peter 3:21).
Another separation is seen in the Patriarchal dispensation when
God called Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3). God gave Abraham a stern requirement:
"Get thee out of thy country and away from thy kindred, and thy father's
house." That is, before God would fulfill the blessings He had promised to
Abraham, the condition of separation had to be fulfilled.
Consider when God called the Hebrews out of Egypt. Why did God
want the Israelites to separate themselves from the Egyptians? "Let My
people go that they may serve Me" (Exodus 8:20). Whether we understand it
or not, one thing becomes clear: separation was essential to their being
able to acceptably worship and serve God. That's the way it was, and that's
the way it is, because "our God changeth not" (Malachi 3:6).
In calling the Hebrews out of Egypt, God formed a unique,
peculiar people to be His very own, and gave them certain conditions of
"separation" and "holiness" to be fulfilled (Ex. 19:4-6; 1Kings 8:53), which
had to be maintained in order for them to remain God's people (1Kings
9:6-9). However, the people were rebellious toward God's word and began to
change His government over them; they began to mingle with the religions
around them. Therefore, it wasn't long before the "distinctiveness" of God's
people totally disappeared; that is, you couldn't tell God's people from all
the other people of the world! They lived, they talked, they worshipped,
they mixed with, and acted like all the other nations around them. God's
call for separation and distinctiveness had lost its edge and meant nothing
to them. God kept His promise, and eventually both the northern and southern
kingdoms were gone -- except for a faithful few (cf. Matt. 7:14) through
whom God brought His Christ into the world.
Today, we have His church -- His people. Those who respond to
the Gospel call are called out of darkness and into His Light. The very
definition of the word translated "church" or "assembly," means "to call
out." In 1Peter 2:9, it speaks of God's "royal priesthood" -- note the word
is singular, not plural, God has only ONE priesthood. The same verse speaks
of God's "holy nation" and "unique people," and note again that both words
are singular, that is, God has only ONE holy nation, His church (not
churches). His one nation operates under one Law - the Gospel. No religious
organization that operates outside His Law can be said to be His "holy
nation."
There is coming a time when a great and final separation will be
made: those who obey His Gospel will be separated from everyone else
(2Thessalonians 1:7-8). That's why God urges, "Come out from among them and
be ye separate" (2Corinthians 6:14-17).

What is life like in Colorado?

Coloradans who embrace the outdoors can connect with what I am about to describe.  There is a feeling that comes on a sunny summer day up in the mountains as you begin a hike, feeling alive with good health and experiencing the chill of the air so much a byproduct of the altitude.  As you walk through the canopy of trees on the trail, you enjoy the increased heart rate as you climb, perhaps hearing the sounds of birds or chipmunks and having sensory overload as you walk through a flower-bedecked meadow or catch a glimpse at the first majestic, snow-covered mountain.  You may see a stream rushing with water the result of the melt-off of the snow.  You smell the penetrating odor of conifers and other tree and plant life.  Taken together, these God-produced sights, sounds, and smells are enough to leave you feeling refreshed.  The purity of undisturbed nature paints a picture of God's power and love.

A Christian has the potential to bear that unique aroma (cf. Phil. 4:18), that lovely appearance (cf. Isa. 52:7; Phil. 4:8), and clarion sound (cf. 1 Cor. 14:8).  Our presence in a room should make a noticeable difference, not that we draw attention to ourselves but that our distinctiveness is seen, heard, and felt by our Christlikeness.  When people expect pride but they see meekness and humility, when they expect vulgarity but they are met with pure speech, when they brace for retaliation but they are met with forgiveness and understanding, when they are stuck in the darkness but are met with light, it is so often refreshing to them.  No, many will not appreciate it (cf. Titus 1:15), but those worthwhile will.  They will see the purity of true, Christian living, borne out in the attitude, the speech, and the conduct, as a breath of fresh air!  May we order our lives that people see that in us today and every day!  --Neal Pollard

Raising the family of God to maturity

Joe Chase
North Loop Church of Christ
Gladewater, Texas.

We must be careful to be openhearted and minded when it comes to reaching
the lost. Far too often we feel greater compassion for people just like us
than we do for those who are different. The old adage seems true: "birds of
a feather flock together." Churches in the New Testament were diverse.
They had rich, poor, Jew, gentile, old, young every way possible for people
to be different; yet they found commonality in Christ.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is
neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
(Galatians 3:28)

Churches looked like their community. As diverse as their city was, so were
the people making up the church. This diversity brought struggle to the
church. Some problems grew out of prejudice against nationality and former
religion. The earliest congregation had to re-evaluate their benevolence
ministry because of the diversity of the congregation. It may have been for
a variety of reasons that the Greek widows were being left out. We don't
know for certain why. We only know that there were problems. Our
congregations will be no different.

Remember also that sinful people bring sinful ways with them into the
church. It is hard to bring people from fleshly to carnal. People don't
change overnight. So during the growth process we have to deal with a lot of
messes. Our role as church family is to help people grow up, grow strong
and mature to the point that they are strong enough to withstand the devil.

And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the
fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the
flesh. (Jude 1:22-23)

Our diverse people and problems call for diverse solutions. You fit into
the solution in a very unique and specific way. Just for example, if we had
a new sister in Christ who struggled with drug addiction, someone might have
to step in as caregiver for her children. Someone may have to arrange for
transportation to and from treatment facilities for her addiction. Some may
have to help fix legal issues brought about by her former lifestyle. On and
on the problems and solutions go. God is able to equip us unto every good
work. We are tools (Ephesians 2:10) to build up the body.

We cannot stand idly by while Satan wages war on a brother or sister in
Christ. Even though that person got themselves into their own mess. We
must do all we can to win those erring, sin-sick brethren.

Notice that the great commission is not "Go baptize everyone and they will
go to heaven." It is "Go make disciples, Baptize them, Teach them." Jesus
adds that when we do that he is with us.

We face a much bigger job than dunking folks in water. We are helping form
mature followers of Jesus. Taking them from sinful, ugly lives to godly,
beautiful ways of Christ. Be patient with people that are not like you.
Don't neglect people who are spiritually weak. Don't ignore the hard work
of raising the family of God to maturity.

Grandmother's Charm Necklace

This week my wife lost her "Grandmother's Charm Necklace", one of those that
have the little people on it that represent special people in your lives,
like grandchildren. We found the necklace, however there was one of the
little charms missing. We searched everywhere we could think of and couldn't
find it. She even got a small sweeper and swept the floor hoping to find it.
We had no luck, it's still missing.

Of course this brought to mind the story of the woman who lost a coin in
Luke 15:8-9. Jesus said, "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses
one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until
she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors
together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.'

The little figure my wife lost was not particularly valuable, but it was
precious because it represented the memory of someone close to her. What is
it that you hold close to your heart as being of special value? Granted to
someone else it might seem foolish or not worth worrying about, but to you
it is special. Why, what makes it special to you?

Now what you may or may not remember about the scripture above, the point is
really not about finding lost coins, (or even about finding lost charms), it
is about finding lost people. The rest of the verse says, "In the same way,
I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one
sinner who repents."

Eventually the charm was found, but I wonder if we put the same amount of
concern, prayer and searching for lost people as we do for lost things.

Perhaps it's time for us to step back and look at our lives and see what is
really important, what we really value, what we would regret if we lost it
(or them). In our life, my wife and I have come to realize that it is not
things that are really important. You can't take things with you, what is
important is people, because those you can take with you to heaven. People
are what are really worthy of rejoicing about! Take a look around you and
ask yourself the question, "If I lost all that surrounds me, would it really
matter?" What is it that we really value in life? Maybe it's time to make a
choice! If you don't rejoice for finding the right things, you may not
rejoice at all!

God's plan for church leadership: Elders

God's will for every congregation is to appoint qualified men to oversee the
work of that congregation. (Titus 1:5; Acts 14:23.) The qualifications
for such an office are found in Titus 1:5-9 and 1 Timothy 3:1-7. Their role
is one of authority (Hebrews 13:17) with the protection, feeding and leading
of that congregation in mind. (Acts 20:17, 28, 32.) "Every" church needs
an eldership. (Acts 14:23.) Where an eldership is not present, a
determined effort must be consistently made toward raising up men that are
qualified to be elders.

Instilling within a congregation a desire to have shepherds over them is
sometimes quite difficult. This is especially true of congregations that
have done for years, perhaps even decades, without an eldership. Often
times it is the case that a congregation is "satisfied" with the way things
are (without elders) and have little or no desire to work toward the
establishment of an eldership. It is with the problems that commonly arise
in a situation such as this with which this article is concerned.

One of the most common barriers encountered in a church when discussion of
appointment of men as elders takes place is that of apathy. It is not
uncommon, rather to be expected, for some members to have absolutely no
interest or concern about the appointment of elders. Those who are
indifferent to this matter often look at the need for an eldership in a
church as a purely "optional" or "secondary" command of Scripture. That
this is hardly a scriptural position is readily recognized when passages
such as Titus 1:5 and Acts 14:23 are consulted. A congregation with an
attitude such as this is a congregation that may have the knowledge of
scripture but with a lack of zeal. A zeal to obey the Lord as well as a
correct knowledge of what the scripture teaches is what is needed by those
who desire to please God. (Romans 10:2.) How true it is that "faith
without works is dead." (James 2:26.) Commonly this viewpoint is expressed
by statements such as "things are just fine the way they are now" or " I don't
see what would be gained by having elders." It would do us well to remember
that God has knowledge of all things and his wisdom is unlimited. (Psalm
147:5.) Man must not rely only on reasoning as to what is "just fine" for
man must rely on revelation and not mere reason alone. (Jeremiah 10-23.)

Another common obstacle that may be encountered is fear. Some will be
fearful of appointing an unqualified man while others will fear the
possibility of breeding problems that are known to exist in neighboring
congregations that happen to have elderships. Perhaps if the congregation
has had elders in the past, some will fear reviving a past bad experience
while congregations that have never had elders and have existed for years
may have a fear of entering "the unknown." All of these statements reflect
a lack of courage. There is nothing to fear when it is the Lord's own
directions that we follow. (Psalm 16:8.) It is not from God from which the
spirit of fear proceeds (2 Timothy 1:7) and when we have a genuine love,
fear is dispelled.

Tradition is another hurdle that must be cleared. Sometimes this obstacle
is linked with fear. There is something about having been set in a
particular position so long that makes any change from that position appear
to be at best questionable. Maturity is spiritual growth gives freedom from
being bound by the customs and traditions of time. Though it may be
"traditional" for a congregation to not have an eldership, the length of
time this condition has prevailed or the number who accept it does not
justify it. Though an eldership may appear to be "some new thing" to a
congregation, it is still God's desire for the church. Tradition can void
the word.

Perhaps the most difficult impediment that must be removed is the desire
for power. In a congregation without elders, everyman who attends the
business meetings is a man with a say whether or not he is a man with a way.
To put it another way, there are too many chiefs and not enough Indians.
Whether many will admit it or not - or even be able to actually recognize it
for what it is - some would rather do without an eldership rather than have
one simply because they might lose their ability to influence (or even
dominate) the decisions that are made in regard to the overall work program
of the church. Humility is the lacking factor in this case and the great
need of all. Our service for the Lord's cause must be done with all
humility. (Acts 20:19.) God resists those who seek to be the "greatest" in
the kingdom by being the greatest in power. The way to the top of the
kingdom is by staying at the bottom. (Luke 14:11.) Undoubtedly, many of
the problems that seem to hinder a church without elders stem directly from
a lack of submission to one another in humility.

In conclusion, we would say once more that God's desire is for every church
to have elders that shepherd the flock. If you find yourself in a church
without elders, the best thing you can do to help attain the goal of
appointing an eldership is to emphasize the obvious wisdom of God in his
designs for the structure of his son's church. You can expect to run into
problems such as apathy, fear, tradition and a desire for influence and
power. However, as you fill yourself with zeal to boldly mature in the
faith no matter where the faith leads you with humility, others will see the
wisdom of God's word and will desire to follow the faith fully as well.
If you are a leading individual in a congregation without elders, ask
yourself: "What am I deliberately doing right now to help establish an
eldership in the future among God's people here?" Won't you do all that you
can to make sure that the congregation with which you worship and work will
work toward growing men of faith who will shepherd the flock of God with
faith? Amen!
