spiritual side of witchcraft and paganism

I think that I've mentioned this to you in the past, but in case you've forgotten, I'm a "wonderer" as I "wander" through life. I take notice of things that make me go "hmmm" when I read them and they stir the editorial pot in my mind, so to speak. With your indulgence, I'd like to provide a few of these items for you to consider today and see if they don't make you go "hmmm" also.

Now there are some real simple ones that really don't have a scriptural connotation to them, but I'll cite a couple just to get you acclimated to what I'm talking about here. First example, have you ever wondered why Tarzan doesn't have a beard? Or, why does Superman stop bullets with his chest yet duck when someone throws a revolver at him? See what I mean? You're probably saying, "hmmm" to yourself right now and thinking, "I never thought of that."

You know, we hear reports a lot of the time about problems in the Church. Problems like Syncretism (mixing of doctrines) or of commercialism invading the brotherhood, IE: the selling of "religious" books and products. Well, just so you'll feel a little better, things aren't going so well for the other side either. I have a short newspaper item about the "witches" in Salem, Mass. feuding over some of them being "too commercial."

I really found this article amusing because it's written in an entirely serious vein. As if this was a major story to be covered. The media is concerned that one "witch" is "selling out to the mainstream" and her fellow "sorceresses" are upset over it. What literally cracks me up is that the reporter states, seriously remember, that the other "witches" are complaining that she is "losing touch with the spiritual side of witchcraft and paganism." The "spiritual side?" Give me a break.

Next, how about a situation that bespeaks to the passage found in Num. 32:23, "...be sure your sin will find you out." This little article sure made me go "hmmm" and then go "hahaha." It seems that three guys, several bricks shy of a load, decided to "streak" through a Denny's Restaurant in Spokane, Washington. They took off all of their clothes, with the exception of their shoes and hats, and ran in the door of the restaurant and dazzled the patrons with their streaking ability.

Now allow me to fill you in on a little more information regarding this situation. Because Spokane is way up North and it was winter time with the temperature hovering at 20 degrees F at the onset of this adventure, our intrepid streakers left their car running outside so it would stay warm and provide a fast getaway. The only thing they did not plan on was exiting the restaurant to find a car thief driving off with their vehicle (and clothes). The police had no trouble locating them as they were huddling behind other cars in the parking lot when they arrived. One thing about it, stupid crooks have always made me go "hmmm" and I think this "hmmming" episode sort of tops the list for me.

Perhaps this next example hits a little close to home, what with all the bad economic news lately, but when I read it I sure went "hmmm" again. All of you know by now that the Federal Government is planning to bailout the home lending industry, basically taking ownership of home loans in default and then, hopefully, managing them and recouping the money later on down the line. Let me remind you of something along this line that occurred in the past and see if it doesn't make you go "hmmm."

Back in 1990 the Federal Govt. took over an infamous brothel in Nevada for tax evasion. As the law required, they tried to run it and recover the money owed to the government. They failed and it went broke. And now, we're supposed to trust the same people who couldn't make money running a brothel and selling alcohol to manage the home mortgage business. Really makes you think, doesn't it?

Here's another situation reported in the press that made me sit up and go "hmmm." At one of our major universities, student activity funds are being given out to the "Muslim Student Association" and the "Jewish Law Students." The student who heads the committee that dispenses the funds stated that the Muslim students are "teaching the culture of Islam" rather than the religion. That statement was explained as being politically correct in these days of multi-culturism.

Now here is the kicker to the story - the Christian student associations are not given any funds because the committee says, and I quote, "Christianity is viewed differently. People don't consider Christianity to be part of a culture." Excuse me! This country was founded on Christian principles and Christianity was certainly part of the culture for many, many years. But, with the way our society has been turning away from those founding principles and adopting the principle of "anything and everything is okay" this attitude at the university doesn't surprise me. It just makes me shake my head as I go "hmmm."

Here's my last news item in the "hmmm" category and I'll close it with a thought derived from the article that I hope will make you go "hmmm" as you consider it.

I read where a man in New York (where else) is suing he ex-girlfriend for lying. He says in his lawsuit that she lied to him when she told him that she loved him. His citation of the evidence of her lying is that she left him for another man. He filed the lawsuit after she dumped him. I have no idea whether this case will go anywhere in court or not but, it's outcome really has no bearing on this lesson today.

What does have a bearing is a thought that this lawsuit conjures up, in a spiritual lesson sort of way. Here's my little conjured effort after going "hmmm" and thinking about if for a while.

What if Christ sued us for lying when we say we love Him and then turn away from Him and commit sin? Think about this scenario in a "hmmm" sort of way and then ask yourself, "Would He have a case?"
