My wife loves roses. She loves receiving roses. She especially enjoys getting them while they are still budding so that she can appreciate several days of vibrant life from them. Sadly, after a time of full bloom, the roses begin to fade in color and the pedals begin to fall from the flower. Keep them long enough and they will be a withered, ugly shell of their former likeness.
There is no Bible verse that declares the sentiments of the song we often sing, though the poetic idea is conveyed in Scripture. Heaven is described as a perfect city, splendid beyond imagination (cf. Rev. 21-22). Because heaven will be the place where our joy and contentment infinitely exceeds what it could achieve on a fallen earth, our senses and experiences in that place will be far better than they are right now.
When I am struggling and weary or floundering with my direction in life, I need to remind myself of the goal toward which I am working. When some sin seems to tempt and allure me, I need to remember that it is not worth the exchange. I am not at my final destination so long as I am on earth. I am going to a city where the roses never fade!
