Why He Gave Himself

It is interesting that people have almost always been looking for a savior in one way or another.  Whether it was for something trivial, or it was for the salvation of all mankind.  Thankfully Jesus is that savior.  We know that Jesus came, but why exactly did He give Himself for us?  Let's examine 2 reasons revealed in Titus 2:14.
First, "to redeem us from every lawless deed."  Redeem means to "pay the price for."  Most people today have some sort of debt.  It could be credit card debt, house debt, school loans, or any other type of debt.  Wouldn't it be great if all of our debt could be wiped off of the table?  While we have to take care of our physical debt, thankfully our spiritual debt can be taken care off for us.  Jesus gave himself in order to pay the price for every sinful thing we have ever done.  Since they were our mistakes, we are the ones who deserve to be punished, but instead Jesus paid for them and delivered us from them.
Second, "to purify for Himself a people for His own possessions."  Not only did Christ want to take care of all our spiritual debt, but He also wanted to purify and cleanse us so we could be His people.  Christ wants to save us.  This is the whole reason why He came.  In order to cleanse us, He shed His blood on the cross.  1 John 1:7 says, "but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin."  The blood Christ shed on the cross is what cleanses and purifies us.  When we receive this cleansing blood through baptism, we then become His people.
Christ wants all to take advantage of this opportunity (2 Peter 3:9).  He gave Himself so that everyone would have a chance to be saved.  While we are undeserving sinners, it is so wonderful that Christ gave Himself for us so we are able to be with Him in heaven.  There is no hope outside of Christ.  There is nothing to redeem our sins and nothing to purify us.  Let's always praise God for the forgiveness and blessings only found in Him.
