All is vanity and striving after the wind

If you read Ecclesiastes 3:1-11, you will find a very negative passage.  Just before these verses, in the last part of 2:26, Solomon notes that "All is vanity and striving after the wind." He then summarizes the first 8 verses of chapter 3 by writing in verse 9, "What profit has the worker from that in which he labors?!" In light of the truths expressed in verses 1-8, there seems to be no profit or value in laboring at all, because everything a man does eventually comes undone!

I see two things these verses are teaching us: (1) Life is frustrating, and (2) Life is frustrating for a purpose.

Just as there are seasons in nature, so are there seasons in our lives. There is a season of laughter, but it won't last long – it will be followed ay a season of tears, but then, that won't last long either, it will be followed by another season of happiness!

We fought WW1, -- then peace;  then came WW2, followed by peace;  then came the Korean War, followed by peace; then theVietnam War, etc., etc.  Things just keep on turning, turning, turning.

When you stop to think about it, life is pretty frustrating. You get something nailed down, but the nails eventually come loose or rust away. Nothing that man does will stay done forever.  You may plant a perennial plant that blooms year after year, but eventually you'll have to replace it. You can put a new roof on a house and it may last 40 years, but eventually you'll have to replace it.  I'm sure housewives could add a couple hundred things along this line:  Wash dishes, but they don't stay clean;  make beds, but they don't stay made;  labor for two house in a hot kitchen to prepare a meal that's devoured in ten minutes, and the family expects you to begin doing it all over again!

What's the use of bringing a new life into the world when that little one will eventually grow, suffer and die?  Doctors could conclude, "What's the use of healing people, they will eventually die anyway!"  Why labor and sacrifice for our children who will just grow up, leave home, and eventually forget all the sacrifices we made for them?  Why give yourself totally to one man or one woman when the odds are 50/50 that your spouse will turn against you? Even preachers are tempted to say, "Why work so hard studying and preparing sermons when the majority will ignore them and their lives never change?"

When we look at life like this, everything does seem pretty pointless, doesn't it? But the REASON it seems pointless is because such a view is only *two dimensional,* that is, we are looking at ourselves in lieu of this world, and God is no where in the picture! Without God in our lives, life will always seem like a mass of contradictions – and that's exactly what the whole book of Ecclesiastes is trying to teach us!

In verses 1-9, God is not mentioned even once.  But when we get to verses 10 & 11, we are told that the hand of God is in *everything* that happens; everything is overseen by Him; and in all these things, God has a purpose; and that purpose is "That we can be exercised in them!"

Now think about this. In every season of life: birth/death -- healing/killing – weeping/laughing – war/peace, there is a purpose! And that purpose is so we can be *exercised in it.*

Finally, in verse 11, we read that God has also set eternity in their heart (NKJV, ESV, ASV).  God allows all these frustrations of life so that we will seek  something *permanent.* In this life, things just keep on turning, turning, and turning. We want off this merry-go-round, but every road we travel comes to a dead end!  How do we "put on the brakes?" We get out of the two dimensional arena, and step into the three dimensional arena – the one that includes God! The purpose for your good times and bad is to make you realize that this world is not your final home. That should ignite that "sense of eternity" which will cause you to seek God. That's the first purpose of this life. And amid all the dead end streets, there is still one way out, and only One Way. "I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, but by Me." (John 14:6).

Good fences make good neighbors

Do You Resent The Fence?

Depends on which side you're on.  Are you being protected… or excluded?

In a long-time-ago conversation with an acquaintance in China who was trying to convince me of the superiority of his form of government, I delivered what proved to be the coup de grace by saying, "I noticed when I came into your country from Hong Kong, that there was a really large fence with manned guard towers every couple of hundred yards.  Was that to keep people in or to keep people out?  I read of several dozens of people who are killed every year in New Territories (area- at that time- between Hong Kong and mainland China).  I've never heard of one who was traveling north!"

If you are a smart sheep [actually that is a contradiction of terms], and you know there are wolves out there, you really do appreciate the value of a good fence.  It protects you.   But if you're a wolf, you hate that thing!  You resent it.  Or if you're a dumb sheep [that's more in tune with reality], and you don't recognize the dangers that lurk out there, you also resent the fence.   It cramps your style.  It limits your freedom.

How do you view God's fences?  Do you try to find the hole in the fence?  Paul boasts that Christ's love [lit.] "holds us together; restrains; restricts" us."  He felt that was a good thing.  There are some things that we don't do… won't say… some places we won't go… because we love Jesus.

How can I like something that "restricts" me?  Only if I believe that it truly benefits my life.

David said that he loved God's law because it was a lamp and a light that showed him the path.  But what if I like the darkness?  Then you won't like God's laws.

God put up some fences.  He put them in exactly the right place.  There is a roaring lion on the other side.  He will tear your life to shreds… before he eats you.  You will wish you had stayed inside the safety of His love.

Dame la Biblia

Kim Spink

Kim Spink was shopping at Wal-Mart in Joplin, Missouri, when a massive
tornado struck the city last Sunday, May 22. Her husband, Greg, and their
three children waited out the storm in their basement at home.

As soon as the storm was over, Greg and the children began searching for
Kim. They made their way to the Wal-Mart only to find it in shambles; only
one wall was left standing. Amidst the incredible rubble in the

Wal-Mart parking lot, they found Kim's SUV overturned and smashed having
apparently been picked up by the tornado and thrown several feet. Her
family looked to see if she was in the vehicle; she wasn't.

Greg and the children continued to look for Kim, not knowing if they would
find her alive or lifeless among the destruction left by the storm. After
three long, agonizing hours, they found her. She was walking toward their
home, unsure if it or her family had survived the storm.

"We had a reunion in the middle of the street," Greg Spink said. What an
incredibly joyous and tear-filled reunion that must have been!

How did Kim survive when the tornado ripped through the Wal-Mart? She was
behind the one wall that was left standing. *

As our hearts are filled with compassion for the people of Joplin whose
lives have been torn apart by the storm (see the links below for some ways
to help), we are reminded of the preciousness of our families, the pain of
loss, but in some cases like the Spink family - the joy of reunion.

The Spinks' ordeal reminds us of another search and rescue mission.

Amidst the devastation that SIN has brought into the world and into our
lives, many are searching for God. It is God's design and desire that "men
would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not
far from each one of us" (Acts 17:27).

When one turns to the Scriptures in his search for God, he soon discovers
that God has already been "searching" for him - and has made provision for
his eternal salvation!

Because of His great love for us, God sent His Son into the world to
experience firsthand the trials and temptations of life. "In all things
[Jesus] had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and
faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for
the sins of the people" (Hebrews 2:17).

This same merciful and faithful High Priest offered the ONE sacrifice -
Himself - on the cross to pay the price for our redemption and give eternal
life to those who accept His offer. Through His atoning death, one finds
life and the promise of living eternally in a place where "there shall be no
more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, [nor] pain" and all the other things
that are associated with the devastating storms of this life (Rev. 21:4).

Jesus will save those who: place their faith and trust in Him (Acts
16:30-31), turn from their sins in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess His
name before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are UNITED with Him in baptism
(immersion) for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). Those who remain
faithful to Him can look forward to a wonderful RE-UNION when He comes to
take His family home to heaven (see John 14:1-6).

Continue searching for GOD and you will discover that He has been searching
for YOU!

Accept His offer of salvation from sin and from the storms of life.

Won't YOU?

trips to the washateria

I would classify that moment as a "rude awakening". In preparing to leave town I had carried a load of clothes downstairs to begin the laundering process. After loading the clothes and measuring the appropriate quantities of detergent and fabric softener, I pushed the buttons to begin. No response. No lights, no sounds - nothing. Anxious efforts to restore power to the washing machine failed.

Following a trip to the laundromat and our out-of-town excursion, an appliance repairman made the official diagnosis: the electronic circuit board had been shorted and a new one was needed if the nine- year-old washer was to ever work again. The price of the new circuit board was close enough to the cost of a new machine to warrant replacing the machine. Now, no more trips to the washateria!

The ability to wash clothes is like many other things in our lives: we don't know how much we depend on them until they're gone. My work doesn't result in heavily soiled clothes, as many jobs do. Still, if I want to be presentable to the public, clean attire is a must. The washing machine has to be reliable and ready.

Those who wish to be presentable to God must also be concerned about cleansing. "Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart ..." (Psalm 24:3,4). The Bible says much, in fact, about cleanliness in the sight of God. The issue is not dirt and grime, but sin. That's why James tells us that "pure and undefiled religion" involves keeping "oneself unspotted from the world" (James 1:27). Living in a world of sin makes it too easy to be splattered by the defilements of sin.

But how can souls that have been muddied by sin ever be clean again? That was the question of Psalm 119:9: "How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word." The answer is simple. Pay attention to what God has said if you want to have your soul cleansed of all that has made it filthy in His sight.

The apostle Paul knew something about being defiled. He wrote about what his life had been before Christ: "... I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man," he wrote in 1 Timothy 1:13. He regarded himself as the chief of all sinners (1 Timothy 1:15). But he also believed God had washed him of those sins. How did it happen?

Acts 9:1-9 tells about Paul's encounter with Jesus. Previously Saul (his Jewish name) considered Jesus a fraud. At the conclusion of the encounter he saw Jesus to truly be the Son of God, the Messiah. But he was still in sin, guilty of offending God in numerous ways.

To remove those sins Ananias was sent by Jesus (Acts 9:10-16) to provide further instructions. What were those further instructions? "And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord" (Acts 22:16). Ananias was carrying out the great commission given by Jesus years earlier (Matthew 28:18,19). By being baptized, Paul could know that his sins were washed away.

You and I need clean clothes. More than that, we need our souls to be cleansed. That power is available to any who will come to Jesus Christ with faith and obedience. Once cleansed, we'll be presentable to God!

Memorial Day sermon

I read a survey this week regarding Memorial Day. The conclusions were that
very few people, especially our young people had any idea as to what the day
was about.

Memorial Day now marks the start of the summer vacation season as Labor Day
does its end. It is the time that the airline ticket prices go up and the
hotels begin their "summer" rates, but it has not always been that way.

The holiday began as time of remembrance of the sacrifices made and for
reconciliation of the nation after the Civil War. By the early 20th century,
Memorial Day had begun its transition to an occasion for more general
remembrance of those who had died. People in general began visiting the
graves of their deceased relatives. As time when by people began placing
flowers and wreaths upon the graves of their departed loved ones. Whether
they had served in the military or not was no longer the main focus, it was
a time of remembrance.

As time progressed it has become a long weekend increasingly devoted to
shopping, family get-togethers, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national
media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on
Memorial Day. Not a bad thing, but not what it was intended to be either.

I'm afraid that for some the same thing has happened for The Lord's Memorial
day. We come together on the First Day of each week for a purpose that is
sometimes forgotten. We come together and enjoy the friendship and
fellowship of other like minded people. We encourage one another and support
one another and for some it is the highlight of their week, because they get
to spend time with people they enjoy being with. That's not a bad thing,
it's how it is suppose to be!

However that is not the main reason we come together. The day was set aside
by The Lord to remember him and his sacrifice for us and the reconciliation
between us and God made possible by Him.

It all began in Matthew 26:26-30 where we read: "And as they were eating,
Jesus took bread, and blessed, and take it; and he gave to the disciples,
and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took a cup, and gave thanks,
and gave to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the
covenant, which is poured out for many unto remission of sins. But I say
unto you, I shall not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that
day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. And when they had
sung a hymn, they went out unto the mount of Olives."

In Acts 20:7 we see this memorial was a regular practice in the first
century church. We read: "And upon the first day of the week, when we were
gathered together to break bread."

The purpose for us coming together on the First Day of the week is the
memorial! The remembering of what Jesus did for us. The rest of what we do
is all good, it is rewarding, it is necessary, but don't forget the reason
for the day!

When will the end of the world be?

MUCH HAS BEEN written about the alleged time and day for the end of the world...

The media has used it to make fun of "Christianity."  Some no doubt will say that because the Judgment day did not come that it will never happen!  But a sobering thought crossed my mind last Saturday night.  What if Mr. Camping had been right? What if the world had ended? What if the Judgment Day had occurred?

There would be no more chances for me to tell my wife and children how much I love them or how much they mean to my life.

There would be no more chances for me to say I'm sorry to someone I might have offended.

There would be no more chances for me to preach messages that so badly need to be heard.

There would be no more chances for me to make sure my life is right with God.

There would be no more chances for me to spend time with friends and loved ones.

There would be no more chances for me to tell friends how special they are to me.

There would be no more chances for me to express gratitude to someone who has been kind to me.

There would be no more chances for me to mend broken relationships.

There would be no more chances for me to repent of sins in my life.

There would be no more chances for me to study the Word of God.

There would be no more chances for me to pray for others.

The fact is Mr. Camping was wrong, but it is still true that "the Day of the Lord will come…" (2 Peter 3:9-10).  It is still true that we will all "stand before the judgment seat of God." (Romans 14:10)  It is still true that "each one of us will give an account of himself before God." (Romans 14:12) The question is as valid as ever, "Are you ready for the Judgment Day?"

There is still time. Do something you need to do today. Don't delay. Remember these words of our Savior, "We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work." (John 9:4)

Dear Father, thank you so much for allowing us more opportunities to do something we need to do now.  Help us to quit putting off important tasks that need to be accomplished and important words that need to be said.  Help us dear God, to live every day for You. In the Name of our wonderful Savior we pray, Amen.  Jeff Jenkins, http://thejenkinsinstitute.com/2011/05/what-if-mr-camping-had-been-right/

"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.  But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up."  2 Peter 3.9-10

Meswsianic prophecies in the Bible

The Messiah was to be the "seed of woman" (Genesis 3:15) – there would be no "seed of man" involved in the birth of God's Son. His conception would be a biological miracle (Isaiah 7:14), that is, He would be born of a virgin. JESUS was born of a virgin; JESUS had a miraculous birth (Matthew 1:18-23).

The Messiah was to be in the lineage of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, David, (Galatians 3:8 & 16).  JESUS was of the lineage of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, David (Luke 3:23-38).

The Messiah was to be born in the city of Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).  JESUS was born in the city of Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1).

The Messiah would work miracles (Isaiah 35:5-7).  JESUS worked miracles (Matthew 4:24); He even raised the dead which was something His worst enemies could not deny (John 11:47).

God's Son would be crucified (Isaiah 53).  JESUS was crucified (Matthew 27).

God's Son would be numbered with transgressors (Isaiah 53:12).  JESUS was numbered with transgressors, being crucified between two thieves (Matthew 27:38).

The Messiah would even intercede for His own murderers! (Isaiah 53:12).  JESUS prayed, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34).

It was prophesied that when God's Son was crucified it would become dark at noon (Amos 8:9). When JESUS was crucified, a thick darkness fell over the land at noon (Mark 15:33).

The Messiah's grave would be with the rich (Isaiah 53:9).  JESUS was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, a very rich man (Matthew 27:57-60).

God's Son would rise from the dead on the third day (Psalm 16:10 with John 11:39). JESUS rose from the dead on the third day (1Corinthians 15:4).

These are just ten of the over 300 prophecies concerning the Messiah that were fulfilled by a single Man named JESUS.

Consider: Could an imposter fulfill a promise to rise again? JESUS prophesied His own death and resurrection (John 2:18-22). After His crucifixion and burial, He was seen alive again by over 500 eye witnesses (1Corinthians 15:3-6).

Consider also: it's a fact of History that tens of thousands of men and women in the first century endured torture and death rather than deny the resurrection of Jesus - - why did they do this?  Answer: Because they were of such noble character that they refused to deny the Truth.  What kind of  *character*  do you have?  Stay Hungry (Matt. 5:6) - Toby

Best dog stories

We need to be reminded that "the abuse of something doesn't make it
invalid." When we have an agenda, we tend to cite extreme examples of abuse
to justify our position.
Are there parents who have abused their children? Yes. Does that mean
that all discipline in the home is to be avoided?
Are there instances where an innocent person has been incarcerated by our
judicial system? Yes. Should we abandon all attempts to punish murderers?
Are there individuals who abuse the concept of God's grace? Yes. So, do
we need to quit teaching that righteousness is imputed and return to
teaching that it is gained by law?
So, if we don't abandon those practices/truths because they can be/have
been/will be abused, how do we keep people from abusing truth principles?
Do we just keep making more and more rules? Do we take away every liberty
because some (maybe "most") abuse it?
We had a stubborn bird dog when I was a kid. He absolutely refused to
stay in his pen. He would bite the wire until he finally made a hole in the
fence. My dad lined his pen with wire that he couldn't bite through. He
dug under the fence. My dad (with the help of a complaining son) buried
that same kind of wire around the inside perimeter of the fence so that he
couldn't dig out. He climbed over the top. We added another two feet of
wire on the top. He still climbed out. We finally drove an iron post in
the center of his pen and chained him to it. We made a miscalculation. The
chain was about twelve inches too long. The next morning, we found him
hanging outside the fence. about twelve inches from the top!
You don't stop doing/teaching something that's right because there are
some folks who are determined to abuse it. And you don't manufacture a set
of your own rules to control people's behavior. You teach God's whole truth
patiently and lovingly. If that doesn't get the job done, whatever else you
do only creates problems.
