Can God use me?

Do you believe God can use you, yes, you even with all of your weaknesses and problems? A few weeks ago I made a mistake in one of the devotionals I wrote in regards to the scripture citation. Not my first and if I continue it surely won't be my last mistake.

I received a few notes in regards to this mistake and sent out a note making a correction, about an hour after the devotional was originally sent.

I received a couple of responses to that correction, one said, "I never noticed the mistake, I know that you know more about the scripture than I, and never questioned it." Honestly, that type of response makes me uncomfortable, because I know that I am human and capable of making mistakes on a daily, (sometimes hourly) basis. I really do appreciate it when someone takes the time to check out the scripture I use and lets me know if I mess up.

Another response to the mistake held a deeper more spiritually uplifting message for me. Charl wrote, "Do not fret over the mistake. God merely wanted someone to read the incorrect passage as well. Remember that He will make all things work together for the good."

Romans 8:28 is one of my favorite passages where God promises to work all things out to the good for those who love him. I believe that with all of my heart and it is one of the hooks upon which I hang my hope. However, I hadn't thought about the other aspect mentioned by Charl. That maybe God needed someone else, somewhere in our world to look up and read the other passage cited.

Someone once asked how I plan my articles, to which I responded, "I never plan my articles." "God gives me an idea or key thought and I just start writing and let the His Spirit lead me." "Often, what I start out with in my mind as the message in the devotional has turned into something completely different by the time I finish." Now here's the question in all of this, "Do you (or I) really believe that God is in control of our lives?" "If we say we give ourselves over to his use, do we really believe he will use us?" Paul writes in Romans 8:14, "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God."

I have to be the first to admit, that I am not sure how God leads us by the Spirit, other than through an intimate relationship with Him and how he directs us through His Word. Notice what Jesus says in John14:21: "Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

So some might ask, "Are mistakes you make really mistakes at all?" Yes, sometimes they are! We say the wrong thing, we do the wrong thing; we are sometimes in the wrong place or with the wrong people. Can God use even mistakes for Good? Yes, of course he can! Let me caution you not to confuse this by thinking that God will cause or approve of sinful behavior! God absolutely does not cause us to make mistakes that cause us to sin? In fact Paul addresses this question in Galatians 2:17 where he says, "If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!"

The point of all of this is simply the fact that even when we mess up, God is still in control of the world and can even use our mistakes to bless his kingdom and his people. God forgives and says, "Get up, dust yourself off and try again following my commandments." So, if you make mistakes in your life realize that you are after all, only human. Forgive yourself and try harder to follow what you find written in God's book, the Bible.
